Ah the pop group. Can't resist pointing you in the direction of this to continue the fireworks theme. They don't have ones like this 'round my local park!

I don't know the answer to any of those questions (useless as always) but I can tell you that that is some great packaging.

Would have loved to have seen the Pop Group live. Tried once in Bristol 1978 but the gig was sold out (because of a bizarre and unfounded rumour that the Stanglers were playing the support slot under a different name!). Saw Rip Rig and Panic several times - they were quite something.

The Pop Group are right at the point where unfettered invention meets plain bonkers. Funny to feel nostalgic for them because the records that they made at the time with Dennis Bovell producing sounded like mad scientists inventing the future in front of your very ears...

this lp, the funny live one - we are time, is my favourite despite dennis's genius touch on the rest and it still scares me

Funnily enough I saw Mark Stewart from The Pop Group play some Steve Reich at the RFH on Sat. And I thought to myself, now you don't hear much of them...

Ally - the live one's ringing bells. Was it on the Y label? And was there a funny little track called Springer with Mark Springer noodling round on piano?

Cocktails - Mark Stewart vs Steve Reich?? Uh? How did that work?

Mark Stewart and the Mafia were unbelievably loud and deranged, him and the session musos from the Sugarhill Gang shredded through a great mincer of reverb and distortion. Adrian Sherwood would mix them live, and DJ in between sets mixing heavy dub with Gary Glitter and Black Sabbath, with all the needles going into the red. My ears rang for about a week...

Hello Spud, I think they kind of go well together, being a bit experimental and 'difficult'. Mark Stewart just played Reich's Electric Counterpoint - which was absolutely fantastic.

(And if you're interested, you can hear Pat Metheny's version on my blog this week - http://cocktailsandrecords.net/blog/2009/11/04/song-of-the-week-electric-counterpoint/)

i was always particularly keen on the mark and the mafia tune 'bastards'. basically dub road digging up with added shouting. could never get it on junior choice though.

Ally - Bastards!! How it all comes back...Op-er-ation Pass-if-ic-aaaation...

Shamefully, I flogged loads of PG/MS stuff off in my mid 30s when I decided that I was too mellow and mature for it now. Mistakenly. All I hung on to was the 12 of Beyond Good And Evil and the 7 of Where There's A Will.

Cocktails - so I guess MS was DJ-ing rather then having become a guitar virtuoso? Or sampling it? I stuck Pat Metheny's Electric Counterpoint on my 'to buy' list after hearing it again on Michael Rutten's excellent Soulsearching show. I'll definitely wander over for a listen.

P.S. Just Googled and I think there's two Mark Stewarts here - Pop Group feller and the Reich guy!

Damn! I thought that connection was too good/bizarre to be true. Thanks for letting me know Spud.

Ally - what did you go for in the end than? Sparklers on the fire escape or oohing and aahing in Battersea Park?
