I think I heard a song from it on the radio on Saturday and it was so good I thought it was an old one; it reminded me of 'Galveston' which I went downstairs to immediately play.
This is very nice, though to be fair it is the spit of Jackson Browne's own 'acoustic' versh.
being an ignorant pig i didn't know hardly any of the originals so they're kind of not really covers to my thick ears which is probably for the best with things like this.
and mc it's not rubin but it's obvioously in the spirit of all that. did anyone like the neil diamond one ? i prefer him with mad arrangements and actions you can do
i like the neil diamond comeback...but i think rick rubin went too far.....in his best intent he stripped neil of all the vapid gloss floss that had built up over his music over the rubbish years..but its too stripped bare...he should have at least pulled in some nice flugal horns....and just made sure they were A REAL brass section and not a programmed digital thing, then it would have been great..coz some of those songs would be mighty with fuller arrangements.....he should have just recorded it old school with old school players and kept anything digital out of the room.
but its good.....the other problem is,its not familiar...we cant locate it to some exquisite place in our memory like say'sweet caroline'....but if you play the new one loads...which you won't..maybe in ten years it will feel more of a satisfying listen....artist and audience alike...we are crushed by the weight of our own history
oooh i like that nico version davy - i'd forgotten all about that one. i got all excited by glen doing the velvets but it turned out to 'jesus' so i've not dared listen yet.
mc - being a big fan of vapid gloss i guess that's what i missed most about the diamond thing - the idea that critical aclaim only comes when you get seriously moody but i'll give it another go if you think it's worth it x
i like what you like too...sweet caroline..cracklin rosie.....those tracks hold serious credibility...but thats not gloss....gloss is the period after all that...'love on the rocks' era, where everything goes tinkly MOR eighties mid america radio piano type sounds....the recording process changed...they chucked out the big brassy band and replaced it with keyboards.
critical acclaim doesn't come from moodiness..does anyone really think that anymore?...the degrees and hierarchy of credibility have been broken down over these last years....and maybe a good thing too. t-rex had no cred at their peak.....and when you listen to those monkees records today they sound terrific.....and how couldnt they when thats neil diamond and glen campbell playing the guitars on i'm a believer.
