squaresville

for all us poor schmoes whose hard earned was dragged kicking and screaming down the stinking sodding saturday high street (duvet cover division) when it longed to be running into the loving arms of pharoah sanders at ronnie's and swooning to the music of small films at the union chapel. it's a bloomin' outrage. hopefully a hardcore quater of an hour of beardy jazz yodelling and a glimpse of postgate/elliot gorgeousness will set us back on the path of righteousness

pharoah sanders - hum-allah hum-allah hum-allah

Shame you couldn't join us for Ronnies, Pharoah was pretty wonderful. He played in a trio with William G Henderson on piano and some amazing conguero called Giovanni Hidalgo that I probably ought to have heard of before.

You don't get crazy free ferocity from Pharoah these days but you do get a lot of beautiful trancey deep modal jazz, ballads in the Coltrane style, and the odd spontaneous eruption of joyful chantaing and clapping. Magic.

(And, Ronnies being Ronnies, you also got a couple of fuckwits who thought that all this bountiful beauty was background muzak for their witless prattling and burger and chips. Can't win 'em all.)

Philistine is OK. 'Philly' is considered unacceptable.

There goes that Stylistics post...
