There's a lifesize statue of a dodo in the 'islands in danger' house at Chester Zoo. When my oldest was quite little she asked about it and I told her what it was. She said she wanted to see one and when I explained why she couldn't she burst into tears.
I feel I should supplement this with a 'she burst into tears' story for the other one too - she asked me where rainbows came from, and I told her it was all about light shining through raindrops on its way to your eyes so really everyone saw their own rainbow, and they only existed in your head. She ran off shouting 'Daddy says rainbows are made up" and burst into tears.
