what becomes of the broken hearted

so the poor lost jam rhythm pals are playing together again with a new welleralike and the world is appalled (apart from the bit that isn't and went to see them and sold out the whole tour). i just feel so sorry for the poor old dears, and i'm quite amazed they've managed to hold out this long.
i dug this piece about the jam split out of smash hits and nearly wept...

surely everyone's got every jam record they could ever need (and if you've not head over to the vinyl villain for a quality selection) so here's something weller's probably murdered somewhere along the way

I saw them on their farewell tour at Wembley and at the end grumpy Paul obviously couldn't wait to get off stage while Bruce stayed there waving at the fans, drinking it all in for one of the last times. I felt sorry for the bugger.

They done good though. I think Paul's right, they stopped at just the right time.

The split was announced in the very first NME ever bought. They then re-released all of the singles and the double page spread reviewing them all took pride of place on my NME collage bedroom wall, right next to my pillow, pointedly coy about Foxton's songwriting whilst at the same time knowing who was being left out in the cold here. I remember the review for 'Funeral Pyre' talking about a German word that means 'an idea who's time has not yet come' - maybe like this tour. Better this than the two of them on the 'Buzzcocks' ID parade, though.

that should be 'the very first NME I ever bought', although it was indeed that momentous.

So, have the Jam split up?
