happy birthday dusty

so today we celebrate

i tried very hard all weekend to write something good for a change but it was all sunny and i had a whole lot of sitting around to do and i convinced myself that all my gushing would be wasted because you've all got everything ever released and know everything there is to know and that all that would make your day of dusty complete would be some funny pictures and a couple of live treasures...

it took me an age to decide which songs to play so being a ditherer for england i've picked three fairly randomly. 'where am i going?' i still find almost impossible to listen to without bursting into tears, the longing of 'the look of love' is pretty much crippling too, so there's 'people get ready' to set you off to face the world again (once your tears have dried).

dusty springfield - where am a going
dusty springfield - the look of love (live)
dusty springfield - people get ready (live)

there's masses of dusty gems on youtube but i'd never seen her delivering bread before ...

Goodness, 'Where Am I Going?' is a heart-wringer indeed. If a bit Anthony Newley, if you know what I mean? Goodness me, but Dusty was Fine.

And it's a lovely post Ally. Shanti x

thank you boys - ms springfield is my all time favourite of all time.
can you imagine no one buying 'dusty in memphis'? the fools. this is a woman who brought motown to our tellys and got chucked out of south africa for refusing to play to segregated audiences. and we chased her away for liking ladies and let her end up in a pay by the day motel in bloomin LA waiting to get rescued by some pet shop boys... what were we thinking?

She was a heartbreaker at every level. It's in the voice. But, I didn't do anything to her. I don't accept your guilt. Please don't blame me.

i think it was probably all our faults.

Yes. Except mine.

alright, except yours. it's those bambi eyes that convinced me.

I LOVE Dusty too of course.

I'll never grow tired of 'I close my eyes and count to ten' or 'How can I be sure?'.
'Goin' Back', the song played at her funeral, is both soothing and moving.

"I think I’m goin’ back
To the things
I learned so well
In my youth

I think I’m returning to
Those days
When I was young enough
To know the truth

Now there are no games
To only pass the time
No more colouring books
No christmas bells to chime

But thinking young
And growing older
Is no sin
And I can play
The game of life to win

I can recall the time
When I wasn’t ashamed
To reach out to a friend
And now I think I’ve got
A lot more than
A skipping rope to lend

Now there’s more to do
Than watch my sailboat glide
And everyday can be
My magic carpet ride
And I can play hide and seek with my fears
And live my days instead of counting my years

Let everyone debate the true reality
I’d rather see the world the way it used to be
A little bit of freedom’s
All we lack
So catch me if you can
I’m goin’ back"

the byrds drug addled version of that ain't bad neither . not a patch on the dusty one, but worth a listen.
and obviously no one can forget the david cassidy version of how can i be sure (unfortunately)
